Funding for the Federal Elections Project was provided by the Political Science Program of the
Division of Social and Economic Sciences of the National Science Foundation (Award
#99-85999). We are also grateful to the South Carolina Board of Elections, especially Ms. Liz
Simmons, for their help in providing us with the data.

Note that the election results include county totals which should be excluded from any precinct
analysis of the election data.

Geography Identification:
CID is a case identification number (unique to each row).
STFIPS is the State FIPS code (45 for South Carolina).
COUNTY is the county name.
CTYFIPS is the County FIPS code.
CTYSTATE is the county code used by the South Carolina government (Multiplying the county
code used by the state by two and then subtracting one with give you the County FIPS code).
PRECCODE is the precinct code.
PRECNAME is the precinct name.
CD is the congressional district number (1-6).
SPLIT is coded 1 for precincts (or county totals and other units for a county such as absentee
ballots aggregated in a row) split between two congressional districts. For these cases, the results
for statewide elections and the registration and turnout data are not directly comparable to the
congressional results (because the precinct is split into two congressional districts and the
congressional results, but not the statewide results or registration and turnout data, into two
separate rows).
